Evidence
- — South Africa and China signed the protocol on phytosanitary requirements for South African cherries. South African Government, 8 September 2026
- — GACC Announcement No. 140 of 2026 set the import requirements: orchards, packhouses and treatment facilities must be registered and approved, and the approved list is published on the GACC website before each export season. General Administration of Customs of China (GACC), 21 September 2026
- — The English text of the announcement was posted on the China–Africa SPS cooperation portal. China–Africa SPS cooperation portal (chinaafricasps.org), 24 September 2026
- — Reuters reported that China still had to confirm South Africa had met all its requirements before a first shipment; the agriculture minister said he expected that approval by the end of the year. Reuters, 21 October 2026
Market context (): According to South Africa's Department of Agriculture, China imported about 586,900 tonnes of cherries in 2025, valued at about US$3.3 billion, and is the world's largest cherry importer. This is China's import total from all origins — not demand for, or a volume of, South African fruit. South African Government, 8 September 2026
Buyer fit (our guidance): Best suited to mainland Chinese importers and distributors, Hong Kong traders supplying the mainland, and Asian importers already running counter-season cherry programmes with the required Chinese import permits. Less suited to buyers who need fixed arrival dates this season.
Season, packing and logistics
- Cold treatment (before export or in transit) or fumigation is required under the supervision of South Africa's plant protection organisation, following the procedures attached to the GACC announcement. General Administration of Customs of China (GACC), 21 September 2026
- Each carton must carry, in English, the fruit name, country, production area and the orchard and packhouse registration numbers; cartons and pallets must be marked “Exported to the People's Republic of China”. General Administration of Customs of China (GACC), 21 September 2026
- Entry is only through Chinese ports permitted to receive imported fruit. General Administration of Customs of China (GACC), 21 September 2026
- Seasonal planning: growers quoted by Reuters see a September/early-October harvest as a chance to reach China before Chilean cherries (Chile and Argentina are China's two biggest suppliers). As of 26 October 2026 that early window has passed for this year's harvest. Treat it as next-season planning, subject to China's clearance — market positioning, not evidence of buyer demand. Reuters, 21 October 2026
- Season and arrival window: not an open sourcing window. Before any live request, confirm the current harvest and export status and China's import approval; ask each supplier to state in writing the harvest and packing window it could commit to once clearance is confirmed.
Compliance checklist for your request
- Is the orchard, packhouse and treatment facility on GACC's published list of approved South African cherry registrations? Ask for the registration codes.
- Has China confirmed South Africa's readiness for the season? Do not contract for delivery until it has.
- Which treatment will be used — pre-export cold treatment, in-transit cold treatment or fumigation — and who signs the treatment record?
- Will the phytosanitary certificate carry the details the GACC announcement requires?
- Do carton and pallet labels match the GACC marking rules?
- Does your Chinese import entity hold the entry plant-quarantine permit for this product?
- Duty: Reuters mentions a Chinese zero-tariff scheme for qualifying South African exports — we have not checked whether fresh cherries qualify. Confirm the exact HS code and origin rules with your customs broker before pricing any duty preference.
Still unknown (checked 26 October 2026)
