Short answer

Thailand reopened to South African apples after a closure from January 2008 to December 2024; South Africa announced it on 4 February 2025, and the first shipment in 16 years left on 10 February 2025. It is an existing corridor, not a 2026 opening.

What the official record shows

On 4 February 2025 South Africa's Minister of Agriculture announced that the country had regained access for fresh apples to Thailand. The market had been closed for about 16 years, from January 2008 to December 2024, because of changes in the trading partner's requirements (South African Government, 4 February 2025 (opens in a new tab)).

A government media advisory dated 9 February 2025 said the minister would witness the first shipment of fresh apples to Thailand in 16 years in Ceres on 10 February 2025 (South African Government, 9 February 2025 (opens in a new tab)). The opportunity for buyers today is to develop an existing corridor, not to be first into a new one.

Takeaway: An existing corridor: compare suppliers and programmes, and keep registrations and pest checks current every season.

Origin, destination and product

The corridor covers fresh apples from South Africa to Thailand. Importers, distributors and retailers in Thailand can add South African fruit to their apple programmes alongside other origins.

The official statements do not name exporters, volumes or prices, and we do not either. Supply and terms are established per request.

Seasonality

Hortgro's industry calendar lists South African apples as available January to December (Hortgro, Key Deciduous Fruit Statistics 2020 (opens in a new tab)) — fruit is harvested in season and supplied from storage across the year.

Availability by variety and month still varies. Ask each supplier which varieties it can pack for Thailand in your arrival window, and whether fruit will be freshly harvested or from storage.

Quality and specification to write into the request

Write the points your customers accept or reject fruit on, so offers can be compared like for like.

  • Variety and colour standard, and whether substitutions are acceptable.
  • Size count per carton and the share allowed outside it.
  • Firmness and sugar targets your customer uses, if any, and how they are measured.
  • Defect tolerances (bruising, russet, skin marks) on arrival.
  • Pack format, net weight, pallet configuration and label language.

Phytosanitary and compliance checks

All apples exported to Thailand must meet the agreed phytosanitary requirements and be free from the quarantine pests listed in the final import conditions. Orchards, packhouses and export establishments must be registered and approved by South Africa's Department of Agriculture (South African Government, 4 February 2025 (opens in a new tab)).

The final import conditions are published by South Africa's Department of Agriculture (import conditions (opens in a new tab)). Read them with the supplier before agreeing a specification, and ask for documents that show its registrations are current for the season.

  • Proof that the orchard, packhouse and export establishment are registered and approved for Thailand this season.
  • How the supplier controls the quarantine pests listed in the import conditions.
  • Draft phytosanitary certificate wording.
  • Residue results for the actual lot against Thailand's limits.

Cold chain and logistics

Agree the transport mode, container settings the supplier will use, the storage history of the fruit (fresh or from storage), the packing date and the arrival-quality criteria before shipment.

Ask who arranges any treatment or inspection the import conditions require, who holds the records, and who carries the risk if a consignment is held on arrival.
