How to check if an industrial equipment supplier is reliable
Judge a supplier on evidence, not on the brochure: plant references you have called, a checked legal entity, financial accounts, a quote that answers your RFQ line by line, agreed FAT/SAT criteria, payment tied to acceptance with guarantees, and written service terms. Score what you can prove below. If you cannot evidence more than 40% of the weight, you are not ready to pay an advance.

0/100 evidence score
Not enough answered to judge. Collect evidence first.
Close these first:
- Verifiable references for similar lines (you spoke to them)
- Financial health evidence (accounts, bank reference)
- Quote answers your RFQ scope line by line, exclusions listed
Method: Yes = full weight, Partly = half, No/Don't know = 0. More than 40 weight points unanswered = "not enough evidence". A screening heuristic, not a rating or certification.
What should I do next?
Warning signs
- References are only logos or photos — no plant contact you can call.
- Advance payment above the usual share without an advance-payment guarantee.
- The quote ignores your RFQ format and lists no exclusions.
- No measurable acceptance test; 'commissioning included' with no criteria.
- Company name on the invoice differs from the one on the quote.
Decision tree
- Can you verify the legal entity? No → stop until you can.
- Have you spoken to a comparable plant reference? No → ask before shortlisting.
- Is the final payment tied to SAT results? No → renegotiate milestones.
- Are evidence gaps above 40 weight points? Yes → collect evidence; No → proceed to clarification round.
Worked example (illustrative, labelled assumptions)
Assumed supplier: references called (Yes, 20), legal entity checked (Yes, 10), accounts seen (Partly, 7.5), quote follows RFQ (Yes, 15), FAT/SAT agreed (No, 0), payment milestones (Partly, 5), service terms (Yes, 10), certificates (Don't know, 0). Evidence score = 67.5 → 68/100, moderate. Top gaps: FAT/SAT criteria (15) and financial evidence. Action: agree acceptance criteria before the contract.
When to bring in expert help
Bring in an independent engineer or our project team when the order is large relative to your balance sheet, the supplier is in an unfamiliar jurisdiction, or the line must reach a contractual output. We do not certify suppliers; we organise comparable evidence and manage supplier outreach on your behalf.

Questions buyers ask
Is this a supplier rating?
No. It is a screening heuristic over the evidence you hold. Weights are shown next to each question.
Do you share supplier contact details?
Our team handles outreach on your behalf; supplier contact data stays private.
Next step
Describe the project in the RFQ builder. Our project team reviews it, contacts suppliers on your behalf and returns a comparison. Free for buyers; typically for projects from USD 250,000.
