Premium cherry imports into China: decide the lot, route and arrival window

Build a comparable buying programme without confusing cultivar reputation, phytosanitary access and arrival quality.

Short answer

For China-bound premium cherries, choose an eligible origin and registered facilities, then contract measurable variety, size, colour and condition requirements. Work backwards from the selling window, compare complete sea and air routes, and require shipment-linked compliance documents and arrival evidence.

Buy an arrival programme, not a variety name

For 2026/27, make the selling window and acceptance specification the starting point. USDA FAS projects Chilean cherry production of 727,000 MT and exports of 667,000 MT in MY 2026/27, following an estimated nine percent export decline in MY 2025/26. These are forecasts, not allocated supply. The August 27, 2026 report also describes pressure from concentrated arrivals and logistics constraints. A larger national crop does not tell an importer how much suitable fruit will reach a particular distribution centre on time. 2 (opens in a new tab)

Build separate buying lines for gifting, premium retail and replenishment rather than treating every dark cherry as interchangeable. Ask for a lot-level offer showing variety, harvest and packing dates, diameter distribution, colour reference, pack format, dispatch mode and intended receipt date. Compare the amount expected to remain saleable after handling, not just the quantity loaded. This is a proposed buying method, not a new regulatory grade. Keep a fallback allocation outside the holiday channel instead of assuming every delayed carton can be sold as a gift.

  • Separate crop forecasts from confirmed lot allocations.
  • Require written approval before any variety, size, pack or routing substitution.
  • Evaluate delivered usable fruit and remaining selling time alongside freight cost.

Choose varieties against the route and customer

FAS identifies Santina, Lapins and Regina as leading Chilean varieties. It specifically associates Santina with early harvest and strong postharvest performance for long-distance exports to China; it does not establish a universal arrival-quality ranking for all three. Treat Santina as an early-programme candidate, then request the actual lot evidence. For Lapins and Regina, do not turn a familiar name into an assumed firmness score or shelf-life promise. Ask for measurements from the offered orchard and packing run. 2 (opens in a new tab)

Bing belongs in the comparison when an eligible origin and appropriate selling window support it. Washington State University describes Bing as an important Pacific Northwest cultivar and a reference for comparison with other cultivars. That description does not make Bing a substitute for a Chilean holiday allocation. Nor should northern-hemisphere harvest comparisons be transferred directly to southern-hemisphere calendar weeks. This article intentionally avoids unsupported variety-by-variety transit-life claims. 13 (opens in a new tab)

  • Specify permitted varieties separately; do not accept an unspecified mixed-variety replacement.
  • Request destination inspection history for the proposed variety, pack and route.
  • Use supplier measurements and a sample approval to test the commercial fit, not a variety reputation alone.

Translate calibre, colour and condition into acceptance tests

UNECE FFV-13 measures size by maximum equatorial diameter and distinguishes quality classes; it is a useful voluntary contract reference, not evidence of Chinese entry approval. Avoid treating row counts or commercial letter grades as a universal millimetre conversion. Require the exporter to state the exact diameter bands and tolerances behind its row or calibre notation. A premium commercial specification can be tighter than a baseline standard, but it must say how inspectors will sample and assess it. 12 (opens in a new tab)

UC Davis identifies skin colour and soluble solids as maturity indicators, and green, fleshy stems as associated with freshness. It also describes pitting and bruising linked to physical injury. Agree a colour chart and the distribution allowed within the pack, rather than asking for “dark” fruit alone. Define firmness by instrument, unit, test temperature and sampling procedure; a number without that method is not comparable. Set separate limits for brown or missing stems, splits, pitting, bruising and decay. No universal premium firmness threshold is asserted here. 11 (opens in a new tab)

Work back from Spring Festival and the receiving dock

The Hong Kong Observatory’s astronomical calendar places the first day of the first lunar month on February 6, 2027: the Chinese New Year date for programme planning. This is not a mainland public-holiday closure schedule. Work backwards from the buyer’s last useful delivery day, allowing for inspection, clearance, inland transport, sorting and store distribution. Ask the broker and distribution centre for actual operating arrangements; do not infer them from the festival date alone. 1 (opens in a new tab)

Choose sea or air by the whole harvest-to-shelf chain. UC Davis recommends rapid cooling and an optimum storage temperature of −0.5 ± 0.5°C, with 90–95% relative humidity; these are postharvest quality recommendations, not a quarantine-treatment schedule. High humidity helps preserve green stem colour. Air carriage does not undo delayed precooling, while a sea booking is only useful if the fruit and pack can tolerate the documented journey and contingency. Obtain a current route plan rather than inserting an assumed transit time. 11 (opens in a new tab)

  • For sea: request harvest-to-loading history, cold-chain records, logger placement and a delayed-arrival scenario.
  • For air: check orchard-to-airport handling, connections, terminal storage and the receiving appointment.
  • For either mode: approve a destination and resale plan if the holiday delivery deadline is missed.

Separate origin access from permission to ship a lot

A June 19, 2025 trade publication reproducing GACC’s access list includes cherries from Chile, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Canada’s British Columbia, and the United States’ Washington, Oregon, California and Idaho. It also lists Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Spain and Hungary; Turkey is marked suspended. This is a dated access-list snapshot, not an exhaustive confirmation of every bilateral protocol or current suspension. Recheck the GACC list and the applicable origin protocol before contracting; never infer eligibility merely because a country grows cherries. 8 (opens in a new tab)

South Africa remains “protocol signed / final confirmation pending” in this buying guidance, checked 2026-10-25. The government records signature on September 8, 2026; reporting dated October 21, 2026 says the first shipment awaits China’s confirmation. An official GACC notice establishing a changed operational status was not confirmed in this review. Do not count South African fruit as an executable mainland allocation until the relevant authority confirms implementation and eligible facilities. A signed protocol and a shipment-ready supply chain are different decisions. 4 (opens in a new tab) 10 (opens in a new tab)

Clear the orchard, packhouse and certificate gate

China’s imported-fruit measures require quarantine approval before signing the trade contract and an exporting-country phytosanitary certificate for entry procedures. The fruit must satisfy applicable inspection and quarantine requirements; paperwork does not remove the possibility of inspection or non-compliance action. Have the importer and broker confirm the current permit, entry port, certificate wording and lot identity before committing the consignment. Retain a document cross-check showing how cartons, packing list, invoice and certificate relate to the same shipment. 5 (opens in a new tab)

Chile’s SAG instructions dated October 5, 2026 require participating orchards and establishments to register in its agricultural registration system, with orchard CSG and packing CSP codes used on labels. They prescribe English carton information including species, Chile, orchard region and commune, and both codes; the pallet, or carton when not palletised, carries the China-destination marking. The instructions also address cold treatment for fruit-fly circumstances. Ask whether the actual orchard and lot require treatment and obtain the applicable schedule and certificate entries; ordinary refrigerated carriage is not proof of a completed phytosanitary treatment. 3 (opens in a new tab)

Keep plant-quarantine registration separate from generic food-registration advice. USDA’s February 3, 2026 DAPQ guidance expressly includes fresh fruits and vegetables within DAPQ facility registration. It supports checking the relevant orchard and packhouse lists; it does not justify demanding a generic Decree 248 food-factory registration number as the sole test for fresh-cherry eligibility. The precise application of Decree 248 to a particular operator or processed product is not determined here; request an authority-backed classification rather than treating all foods alike. 9 (opens in a new tab)

Check residues and labels against the arrival regime

GB 2763 compliance needs a China-specific pesticide review. FAS reports that GB 2763-2026 took effect on March 1, 2026, replacing GB 2763-2021 and its supplementary GB 2763.1-2022. Do not reuse an old residue matrix or assume another destination’s limits are interchangeable. Ask the technical team to map all applied active substances to the applicable cherry or commodity-group limits and arrange lot-linked testing with suitable reporting limits. A laboratory result is evidence for the tested sample, not a replacement for official border controls. 6 (opens in a new tab)

GB 7718 concerns prepackaged-food labelling; whether a particular retail cherry presentation falls within its scope needs product-specific assessment. FAS reports that GB 7718-2025 and associated updated labelling rules enter into force on March 16, 2027, after the Spring Festival date. Do not assume publication alone made the new text mandatory for every 2026/27 consignment. Have the importer approve the applicable version, Chinese consumer-label requirements and any exemptions before printing. Separately retain the origin protocol’s phytosanitary carton marks: a consumer label cannot substitute for orchard traceability. 7 (opens in a new tab)

  • Obtain the pesticide-use record and a China-focused test scope before shipment.
  • Approve retail artwork and export-carton marks as distinct documents.
  • Recheck applicable rules if stock or packaging will be marketed across the labelling transition.

Make arrival claims evidence-led—and the RFQ comparable

Use arrival inspection to distinguish a specification dispute from a food-safety or quarantine problem. UNECE’s cherry standard offers an agreed vocabulary for condition and defects, while UC Davis explains why physical injury and temperature history matter. Write the inspection location, sampling method, notification deadline, retained evidence and independent-survey procedure into the sale contract before loading. Photograph unopened cartons, labels and seals; record pulp temperatures, logger data, sample counts and defect categories against lot codes. Do not assign responsibility from a photograph alone. 12 (opens in a new tab) 11 (opens in a new tab)

For a proposed claim file, retain the signed specification, approved substitutions, invoice, packing list, transport document, phytosanitary certificate, any treatment record, inspection report and correspondence. State whether the remedy sought is sorting, a commercial allowance, rejection or another contractual outcome. Keep evidence of mitigation and resale separate from the original condition assessment. These are suggested contract controls, not statutory claim deadlines or a statement that every carrier, insurer or seller accepts the same procedure.

Global B2B Group offers buyer-side coordination: buyers submit one structured RFQ through our platform; our team reviews it, approaches suitable independent suppliers on the buyer’s behalf and returns comparable proposals. Buyers never contact suppliers directly. The service is free for buyers, assisted sourcing applies to programmes of USD 250,000 or more per year or season, and suppliers cannot pay for placement. Global B2B Group does not grow, pack, export, import, sell or certify produce, has no contracts with any company researched here, and provides no assurance of supply, quality, certification or market access.

Frequently asked questions

Is Santina always preferable to Regina or Lapins?

No universal ranking is supported here. FAS identifies all three as leading Chilean varieties and specifically describes Santina’s early harvest and long-distance postharvest performance. Choose by the actual lot, destination channel and journey, with agreed size, colour, firmness and defect tests. A familiar cultivar name cannot establish the condition of the shipment on arrival. 2 (opens in a new tab)

Can row size replace a diameter specification?

Use it only with the exporter’s written definition. UNECE measures cherry size by maximum equatorial diameter, which provides a more transparent basis for comparison. Ask for the mm band, distribution and allowed undersize, then use the same sampling method at receipt. This guidance does not supply a universal conversion between row notation and commercial calibre letters. 12 (opens in a new tab)

When is Chinese New Year in 2027?

It falls on February 6, 2027, according to the Hong Kong Observatory’s lunar calendar. That date is a planning anchor, not a customs-clearance promise or a mainland closure timetable. Confirm the receiving centre’s last delivery day and work backwards through inspection, inland distribution and selling time before choosing the dispatch date and transport mode. 1 (opens in a new tab)

Can we book South African cherries as approved supply?

Use “protocol signed / final confirmation pending”, checked 2026-10-25. The government confirms signature on September 8, 2026, but October 21, 2026 reporting says the first shipment awaits China’s confirmation. No official GACC notice changing the operational status was confirmed here. Obtain current authority confirmation and facility eligibility before treating an offer as shipment-ready. 4 (opens in a new tab) 10 (opens in a new tab)

Does refrigerated transport satisfy cold-treatment requirements?

Not by itself. Chile’s SAG guidance distinguishes export requirements and fruit-fly-related cold treatment. Ask whether treatment applies to the orchard and consignment, then check the authorised schedule, records and phytosanitary certificate entries. Quality refrigeration and a formally supervised phytosanitary treatment serve different purposes; the existence of a reefer booking does not establish that treatment has been completed. 3 (opens in a new tab)

What should an arrival-quality claim contain?

Start with the signed specification and a representative lot-coded inspection, using the agreed condition vocabulary. Keep carton photographs, temperatures, logger downloads, sample counts and a record of notification and mitigation. UNECE provides a quality reference, not a universal claims deadline. The contract should determine the survey process and remedies; distinguish commercial defects from any official safety or quarantine issue. 12 (opens in a new tab)
