Credit Insurance for Cross-Border Industrial Trade

How single-risk and whole-turnover credit insurance protect exporters and unlock cheaper financing for industrial equipment and infrastructure sales.

Trade credit insurance covers the risk that a buyer doesn't pay — for commercial reasons (insolvency, protracted default) or political reasons (transfer risk, expropriation, war). For industrial exporters it is both a risk-management tool and a financing enabler.

Whole-turnover cover. Insures the exporter's whole receivables book, priced as a percentage of insured turnover. Best for exporters selling to many buyers on open account.

Single-risk / single-situation cover. One large transaction with one buyer — typical for capital equipment and infrastructure. Priced per deal based on buyer, country and tenor.

Public vs private. ECAs (SACE, Hermes, UKEF, EDC, Sinosure, US EXIM) cover longer tenors (up to 10+ years) and higher political risk. Private insurers (Atradius, Coface, Allianz Trade, Chubb, AIG, Lloyd's market) usually cover up to 2–5 years and are faster to close.

Cover ratio. Typically 90–95% of the insured amount, with the exporter retaining the balance to preserve underwriting discipline.

Financing lift. Insured receivables can usually be discounted or forfaited by a bank at close to the insurer's cost of funds — turning a 180-day payment term into cash on shipment at a competitive rate.

Underwriting inputs. Two to three years of buyer financials, KYC pack, commercial contract, shipment terms and — for political risk — country limit availability at the chosen insurer.

For any industrial exporter above USD 5M annual cross-border revenue, an unused credit-insurance policy is money left on the table.

Frequently asked

Does credit insurance overlap with a Letter of Credit?

They cover different risks. An LC shifts payment risk to the buyer's bank at shipment; credit insurance covers open-account or deferred-payment exposure over a longer horizon. Many industrial deals use both.
