Aquafeed Extrusion Plants: A Buyer's Guide to Twin-Screw Lines, Capacity and OEMs

How to specify and procure a modern aquafeed extrusion plant — twin-screw vs. single-screw, floating vs. sinking pellets, capacity planning and how to shortlist qualified OEMs.

Aquafeed is one of the fastest-growing verticals in industrial nutrition, driven by tilapia, shrimp, salmon and increasingly diversified species production. But procuring an extrusion plant is very different from procuring a conventional pellet mill. The technology, suppliers, capital intensity and operational risk profile all shift — and buyers who apply broiler feed mill logic to aquafeed procurement usually overspend.

The first specification decision is twin-screw versus single-screw extrusion. Twin-screw lines handle a wider recipe range (including high-fat marine formulations and shrimp diets), give better control over pellet density and floating/sinking behaviour, and command a meaningful CAPEX premium. Single-screw lines remain cost-effective for standardised freshwater species at scale. FeedMatch helps buyers match extrusion technology to their actual production plan, not to a vendor's preferred platform.

Capacity planning is the second lever. Aquafeed extrusion is typically specified in tonnes per hour of finished product at a defined density and pellet size. A 4 t/h twin-screw line for shrimp is not equivalent to a 4 t/h line for tilapia — recipe, moisture and cooling requirements differ. Buyers should specify capacity in the exact product mix they intend to run, not the vendor's headline number.

Shortlisting qualified aquafeed OEMs means going beyond brand recognition. Buyers should ask for reference lists filtered by species, geography and capacity band; verify after-sales presence within reasonable logistics distance; and confirm spare-parts availability for die plates, knives and screw elements. FeedMatch runs this screen on the buyer's behalf, so the shortlist that lands on the decision table is genuinely comparable.
